Bhutan is extraordinarily rich in bird life because of its location in the extremely biodiversity Eastern Himalayas. The existence of vast areas of relatively undisturbed natural habitats and the country’s reprogressive conservation policies. In particular the vast expanses of old growth subtropical and temperate forests have become unique in the Himalayas, providing habitat for birds, now rare elsewhere, such as Rufous-necked Hornbill Aceros nipalensis, White- bellied Heron Ardea insignis and Black-necked Cranes Grus nigricollis. A total of 700 species has been confirmed in Bhutan.
